Welcome to another Thursday, WilCo! As we ease toward the end of the week, we’ve put together a lineup filled with simple, local ways to unwind, connect, and enjoy the days ahead.

This week, I’m sharing something a little closer to my heart as I had the opportunity to serve alongside my daughter for a few days at the Round Rock Serving Center. ❤️ It was a beautiful reminder that giving our time and serving others is a gift at any age, and I’m grateful we are able to experience it together.

Plus, we’re highlighting a local volunteer effort doing incredible work for older adults in our community. Hope this week’s edition gives you a few good ideas and a little inspiration along the way!

🛠️ A safer path starts at the front door

A front step may look small, but when walking becomes difficult or a wheelchair is needed, it can stand between a neighbor and everyday life. The Texas Ramp Project helps restore that independence by building safe wheelchair ramps for older adults and people with disabilities who cannot afford one.

Williamson County is served by the organization’s Austin-North region. Local volunteers build every ramp according to accessibility guidelines, and the completed ramp is always free to the recipient.

Families can begin by speaking with a healthcare provider, social worker, emergency responder or qualified community organization. Requests must come from one of these professionals, who will confirm the medical need and financial hardship before submitting the referral.

The Texas Ramp Project also welcomes volunteers ages 16 and older. No building experience is necessary because trained leaders guide each crew from beginning to end. With work gloves, a drill and a few helping hands, volunteers can give a WilCo neighbor the freedom to enter and leave home more safely.

🍽️ Texas comfort food with a Hutto welcome

211 Co-Op Boulevard, Hutto, TX

Jack Allen’s Kitchen brings plenty of Texas personality to Hutto, with a menu that moves easily from fresh salads and Gulf seafood to enchiladas, burgers and serious comfort food.

Start with the homemade pimiento cheese or fried green tomatoes. The crispy Gulf redfish comes with lump blue crab and cilantro-pesto cream sauce, while the slow-braised beef barbacoa enchiladas arrive with roasted poblano cream sauce.

Anyone craving a classic can choose chicken-fried steak, chicken or pork chop, all covered in green chile gravy. A slice of chocolate bourbon pecan pie makes a fine finish.

📵 Hang Up on This Jury-Duty Scam

Hutto police are warning residents about callers who impersonate judges, constables or deputies and claim that an unpaid jury-duty warrant requires immediate payment. Do not provide personal or financial information; hang up and call police directly at 512-864-8282, ext. 7605, if you are concerned about a call.

🎨 Put Your Favorite Pet in the Spotlight

Round Rock Public Library is accepting original artwork featuring pets and favorite animals for its annual Paint A Pet exhibition. Submissions are welcome through September 15, and the artwork will be displayed at the library from September 1 through October 5.
